CSL Installation for Windows 95CSL is an MS-DOS-based application. Because of its demanding real-time hardware requirements, the software runs best when the system is set to exit Win95 to the MS-DOS mode. On some faster Pentiums (166 MHz+), it is possible to run CSL and options from an MS-DOS window, without exiting Win95, but these instructions assume the use of the MS-DOS mode. Before you configure the icon in Windows 95 to run the CSL or its options, please follow these directions to install the CSL software and options. Insert CSL software disk #1 into your floppy disk drive, either drive A or B. Click on My Computer and select your floppy drive, again either (A) or (B). Select Install, and begin to install the CSL software using the provided install program. Once the installation process is complete, you will have to repeat the process for each of the CSL options you've purchased. We recommend that the Dosshell.exe program be used to select between the CSL core program and CSL options when in the MS-DOS mode. The Dosshell program will serve as a "base" in the MS-DOS mode where the user can select and switch between the main CSL core program and any available CSL option. When the user is done with CSL work and then exits Dosshell, the system will automatically boot back into Win 95. If the Dosshell.exe program is not available on the computer, please copy the entire (Dosshell and support files) disk to the C:\CSL50 directory. Contact Kay to obtain a copy if this is unavailable. After all of your software has been installed or copied to your hard drive, get back to your Windows 95 desktop. Minimize or close all applications to view only the Windows 95 desktop. To configure the icon in Windows 95 to run the CSL and options using Dosshell, please follow these directions to configure the shortcut icon. Go to the Start icon at the lower left-hand corner of the screen and click on it using the Left mouse button. Click on Programs, and then select Windows Explorer. Reduce the size of the Windows Explorer window so that part of the desktop screen is visible in background. Select the C:\CSL50 directory and locate the icon for the Dosshell (Application) executable file denoted as Dosshell.exe. Drag the Dosshell.exe file from the Windows Explorer to the Desktop by pressing and holding the left mouse key while the file is highlighted. By dragging this file from Windows Explorer to the desktop, a Shortcut to Dosshell icon will be created. Once the shortcut is dragged to the desktop, you should now exit the Windows Explorer b y clicking the X in the upper right corner of the command box. Click the right mouse button on your Shortcut to DOSSHELL icon. Select Rename, change the name of the icon to "CSL and Options Using Dosshell". Click the right mouse button on this new CSL and Options Using Dosshell icon. Select Properties. Select Program which should read DOSSHELL. The Command Line should read C:\CSL50\Dosshell.exe (or whatever directory includes Dosshell). The Working Line should read C:\CSL50 (or whatever directory includes Dosshell). Select Advanced ... and select MS-DOS mode, and then Specify a new MS-DOS configuration. Specifying a new MS-DOS configuration is not always required but can be useful for CSL since the user can specify and configure only the drivers needed for CSL (i.e., EMS, Mouse, CD-ROM) and not include drivers not required for CSL (i.e, Network, etc.). When you select Specify a new MS-DOS configuration, Windows 95 will highlight two files for you: config.sys and autoexec.bat, both for MS-DOS mode. In the config.sys, insert, at very least, all of the following device drivers (other drivers may be needed for CD-ROM, etc.): Device=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS In the autoexec.bat, insert, at very least, all of the following device drivers(other drivers may be needed for CD-ROM, etc.): Set TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP Also add C:\CSL50 to the PATH statement. NOTE: The last two lines refer to the DOS mouse driver (and directory location) which must be installed. Windows 95 provides its own mouse driver which is not generally available in the MS-DOS mode. An MS-DOS driver should have been provided with the mouse included in your system, but it may not have been installed. To install it, use the install disk provided with your mouse. Then select OK. At this point, the shortcut should be configured properly to run your various CSL programs and available options. Other inclusions to the autoexec.bat must be made in order to run the MDVP, DAF, IPA Tutorial, Direct-to-Disk, and Real-Time Spectrogram programs. Consult the factory for these inclusions. Set MDVPLIB=C:\CSL50\LIB
