Analysis-Synthesis Laboratory (ASL), Model 5104 The Synthesis option extends the LPC (linear predictive coding) analysis capabilities of the CSL and Multi-Speech core software by providing synthesis of a speech signal from the LPC signal analysis, manipulation of LPC-extracted parameters either graphically or numerically, and resynthesis. This program is useful in acoustic phonetics because specific speech parameters (e.g., fundamental frequency and formant values) can be precisely altered for speech perception experimentation. These altered files can be exported back to core CSL software for analysis or loaded into the Auditory Perception Program and Database for psychoacoustic studies. In addition to manipulating existing speech samples, students can also experiment with synthesis-by-rule by entering speech parameters "from scratch" and listening to the resultant signal. These exercises are facilitated by convenient graphic and numerical editors supplied by the program. A tutorial covering LPC theory along with practical exercises is included. The analysis/synthesis routines can be implemented using pitch-synchronous, residual-driven LPC for superior synthesis. Fine-tuning of speech alterations can be tested quickly, facilitating experimentation. Current CSL, Model 4500 and 4150, software and database options include:
